Few places in the world have been continuously inhabited for as long as Jerusalem’s Old City. Home to nearly five thousand years of ongoing life, it is a place defined by layers of history that remain visible in its streets, buildings, and daily rhythms. Yet alongside this magnificent history lives a diverse community of residents, including many who have spent their entire lives within its walls. While living in such a remarkable setting carries a certain privilege, many older residents face a very different reality in their later years. A significant number live below the poverty line, with limited access to the resources and support needed to age with security and dignity. The Al Jabsha Center for the Elderly in the Christian Quarter was established to respond to this need, offering elderly residents a place of care, connection, and stability within their own neighborhood.

Operated in partnership with the Jerusalem Municipality’s Social Welfare Office, the Center responds to the needs of one of the Old City’s most vulnerable populations. Nearly half of the area’s senior citizens are recognized by welfare services as requiring support, often contending with a combination of physical limitations, financial hardship, and loneliness . The Center creates a framework through which these challenges can be met not only with services, but with community. It serves elderly residents from the Christian Quarter alongside those from nearby neighborhoods such as Wadi Joz.

The Jerusalem Foundation played a central role in shaping the Center as it exists today. Around 2015, it undertook a comprehensive renovation of the facility, redesigning it to meet modern standards of accessibility and comfort while preserving its place within the historic fabric of the Old City. The renewed space allowed for a significant expansion of activity and participation, transforming the Center into a vibrant hub for older residents. Since then, the Foundation has continued to support programming, ensuring that the Center remains both responsive and sustainable in the face of growing need.

At the heart of the Center’s work is the understanding that aging is not only a medical or economic condition, but also a social one. Many participants arrive after experiencing the gradual erosion of the networks that once sustained them. Children move away, partners pass on, and mobility becomes more difficult in a landscape defined by narrow streets and uneven stone paths. In response, the Center offers a wide range of activities designed to rebuild connection and foster wellbeing.

These include group workshops in art, cooking, and gardening, exercise and movement classes, discussions and social gatherings, as well as opportunities to engage with technology and maintain contact with family members. Courses focused on resilience and peer support help participants develop tools to navigate the emotional dimensions of aging. Moments of celebration hold particular significance. During the Christmas season, the Center organizes gatherings that bring together elderly residents and their families, offering warmth, familiarity, and a sense of festivity.

It allows those who are so deeply woven into the fabric of this place to remain within it, receiving care, support, and community from the comfort of their own homes and familiar streets. Within its walls, and through its outreach, aging is met not with isolation, but with connection. In a place defined by its long and layered history, the Center makes it possible for Jerusalem’s elderly residents to continue living within one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities, with dignity, companionship, and the support they deserve.
