Jerusalem is home to many of Israel’s leading institutions of higher education, including the world-renowned Hebrew University. Each year, tens of thousands of students from the city and across the country come to study, live, and build the foundations of their adult lives within it. To invest in these students is, quite simply, to invest in the future of Jerusalem.

the future of the city

For years, the Jerusalem Foundation has supported students across the city, particularly in Jerusalem’s advanced arts institutions and academic programs, from an understanding that young people pursuing higher education are essential to the city’s future. Over the past eight years, these efforts were brought together into a single, coordinated framework through the establishment of the Jerusalem Scholarship Fund for Preparatory and Higher Education. By consolidating the city’s major scholarship resources, the fund streamlined access while significantly expanding opportunity. It was designed not only to support students during their studies, but to encourage them to see Jerusalem as a place where they can remain, contribute, and build their lives.

The fund reflects the breadth of Jerusalem’s academic landscape. Scholarships are awarded to students in universities, academic colleges, preparatory programs, and specialized institutions, including advanced schools of the arts alongside engineering and technical fields. This wide reach ensures that support is not limited to a single track or population, but extends across disciplines and backgrounds, mirroring the diversity of the city itself. Over the past decade, the Foundation has steadily expanded the program’s scale and impact, with tens of thousands of scholarships distributed, an achievement that speaks both to the demand for such support and to the Foundation’s capacity to meet it.

For many participants, these years are formative. Whether they are lifelong Jerusalem residents or newcomers, their experience of the city during this period often shapes the decisions that follow. By helping to create a stable and meaningful student experience, the scholarship fund plays a quiet but decisive role in how Jerusalem is remembered and reimagined by those who pass through it. When the question of what comes next arises, the city is not simply where they studied, but a place in which they have already invested time, relationships, and purpose.

an investment in people and place

The Jerusalem Scholarship Fund thus operates as a long-term investment in both people and place. It supports talented young individuals at a pivotal moment in their lives, while strengthening the social and educational fabric of the city. In doing so, it helps ensure that Jerusalem’s future leadership is not only well-educated, but also deeply connected to the communities they have already helped to shape.
