What does it mean to serve a community? At times, it is about providing essential resources and access to knowledge. At others, it is about creating a space where neighbors can meet, connect, and feel a sense of belonging. And sometimes, it is about something less tangible but equally important, offering people a voice, a sense of purpose, and the opportunity to shape their own futures. The Israel Asper Community Action Center in Ramot was created with precisely these aims in mind, responding to the evolving needs of a diverse and growing neighborhood in Jerusalem.

a dynamic hub

Established in 2008 as a joint initiative of the Jerusalem Foundation and the Asper Foundation, the center was envisioned as a dynamic hub for community life in Ramot, bringing educational opportunities, technological access, and innovative learning tools into the neighborhood. From its earliest days, it sought to address gaps in access to education, technology, and social services, particularly for populations that are often underserved. By combining philanthropic vision with local knowledge, the center quickly became a focal point for residents from a wide range of backgrounds, reflecting the social and cultural diversity of the neighborhood itself.

Today, the Israel Asper Community Action Center offers a wide spectrum of programs designed to serve children, youth, adults, and seniors alike. Its educational initiatives include a learning center that provides support in core subjects such as English and mathematics, alongside assistance across the broader school curriculum. These programs are complemented by a strong emphasis on digital literacy. Computer classes are offered to participants of all ages, introducing skills that range from basic proficiency to more advanced fields such as animation and robotics. In doing so, the center not only equips participants with practical tools but also opens pathways to creativity, confidence, and future opportunity.

The center also places a strong focus on vocational training and personal development, particularly for at-risk youth. Through targeted programs, participants gain both professional skills and the guidance needed to navigate the transition into employment and adulthood. At the same time, intergenerational initiatives bring together veteran Israelis and new immigrants, fostering connections that strengthen the social fabric of the community. Seasonal activities, including summer programs for children and youth, ensure that the center remains active and accessible throughout the year.

a space for everyone

A defining feature of the center is its inclusivity. It serves men and women from secular, religious, and Haredi communities, as well as individuals with special needs, the elderly, and families facing economic hardship. By creating a shared space that welcomes this diversity, the center enables encounters that might not otherwise take place, encouraging mutual understanding and a sense of collective responsibility.

building community

More than a collection of programs, the Israel Asper Community Action Center represents a sustained commitment to the idea that strong communities are built through opportunity, connection, and care. Whether through a child discovering new skills, a young person finding direction, or a retiree gaining confidence in a digital world, the impact of the center is felt in both large and small ways. In continuing to provide resources, support, and a place to belong, it remains true to its founding purpose, offering residents of Ramot not only services, but a meaningful sense of participation and purpose within their community.
